Three men, allegedly Naxalites, gangraped three teachers of a government-run residential tribal school in Gadchiroli district, around 250 km from Nagpur, on Thursday.
The three men picked up the teachers — one of them six month pregnant — from the school at Rangi village saying they had been summoned to a meeting in the forest and gangraped them for over five hours.
Gadchiroli Additional Superintendent of Police Manoj Sharma, however, said the Naxalites were not involved.
“In view of the Naxalite track record, they can’t do such a heinous act,” he said.
Sharma said a man reached the school on Thursday and told the hostel superintendent that the Naxalites wanted the school staffers to attend a meeting.
When none of the staffers reached for the meeting, the three accused reached the school around 11 pm. Introducing themselves as Naxalites, they asked the teachers to clarify why they had kept the school open despite a weeklong bandh called by the Naxalites and asked the three teachers to accompany them to the forest.
After they were released the next morning, the teachers met the project officer of the Integrated Tribal Department Project at Gadchiroli. He, in turn, informed the police.
The police have registered offences under 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
