Naxalites fired at a helicopter ferrying ailing policemen and at security forces deployed on the ground for its safe passage in Dantewada district on Friday.

This led to a gunbattle that lasted four hours. A constable was killed and another injured in the firing.
Dantewada is in the state’s Bastar region, one of the most Naxal-infested places in the country.

The helicopter got hit twice but the pilot managed to safely make the onward journey. All personnel on board were fine.

The helicopter was on its way back from Kistaram village in the district, having ferried food material for troops posted at the police station there, and was flying to Jagdalpur, 200 km away, with six ailing policemen on board.

The slain policeman was identified as Constable Laxmi Narayan Dhruwe. The injured man was taken to hospital in critical condition, Pawan Deo, deputy inspector general at the police headquarters said.

There has been a spate in Naxalite attacks in Chhattisgarh, especially since the beginning of the Lok Sabha elections. In the first phase, the Maoists killed over 36 people, including politicians. (With agency inputs)
