ND Tiwari has been a reluctant chief minister and has no intention of contesting the forthcoming assembly elections in Uttarakhand.
But the party's screening committee is believed to have kept his Ram Nagar seat vacant while forwarding its list of names to the party's central election committee.
The committee, which is led by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, is slated to meet on Wednesday to clear the names.
Unlike Punjab, where the state unit chief will contest the elections, Uttarakhand pradesh Congress committee president Harish Rawat will not enter the electoral fray.
Nor is senior leader Satpal Maharaj likely to do so.
