CHAIRMAN OF Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR) Prof K Ramakrishna Rao spoke on “Philosophy-A Global and Regional Symbiosis” at a lecture organised by Philosophy Department, Lucknow University on Tuesday. Prof Rao emphasised the need for cross-cultural and original research in philosophy.

“Philosophy is seen as relevant by some students to enhance their career prospects while others think it increases rationality,” he said.

Prof Rao said that philosophy is a wisdom discipline. He said: “Other subjects give us knowledge and information but not necessarily wisdom.” He emphasised the need for philosophical activism in the present situation and reminded that Indian systems also can be creatively interpreted to encourage social responsibility and suppress egoistic individuality. He expressed his worry at the fragmentation in the world and expressed the need for inclusivism.

“Philosophically identity unites as well as alienates people, both. Identities have a cognitive as well as an emotional content. We need to promote common shared values and philosophers need to encourage the formation of these through activism,” he said while speaking at a lecture on relevance of philosophy.

Prof Rao further said: “UP Government is a partner of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research and it has a deliberate stake through its nominated members. ICPR academic centre has developed as the countries finest library”.

The Chairman said that the UP government was morally obliged to support the Research Centre. He said that the state government should put in financial support also in the enlightened interest of UP. The Centre would soon then become a thriving centre of excellence, he said.  The session was chaired by Prof Nirupma Srivastava, Head, Philosophy Department.
