The Indian industry never passes up a chance to flaunt its corporate social responsibility projects. But how is that it has completely forgotten Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birthday? But they are not the only ones. The government and the media are also guilty of this omission. There are big advertisements all over for the Gurgaon-Delhi expressway by the government, but there is not even a small place for Netaji in one corner of any newspaper, leave alone articles in the media. Netaji’s death may remain a mystery, but he will always be alive in our memory.
Better days ahead
With reference to the editorial Sensex sensitivities (January 23), Monday’s crash once again proves that what goes up must come down. The hype around Tata’s Nano, followed by a massive response to Reliance Power’s IPO was too good to last. Retail investors should not lose heart though. They should wait for the listing of Reliance Power in mid-February to recover some of the lost ground.
Arms and the men
Arporos of the report Defence challenge: Luring the youth (January 21), one wonders how long the Indian Army will be able to sustain itself in such difficult times. With the strength of the National Defence Academy at an all-time low, what will happen to the army if there are no officers left to lead its men? The government should come up with a lucrative policy to attract the youth to join the armed forces.
Lessons in defeat
Pankaj Vohra in his article Caution: polls ahead (January 21) rightly says that Sonia Gandhi has done more than her share to strengthen the Congress, but the party seems to have forgotten its winning ways. Senior party leaders who are now mere figureheads should be rested. Elections are due in 10 states in 2008, and lessons learnt from the electoral defeats in four states recently should help devise new strategies.
