There were tumultuous scenes outside a government school in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Tuesday afternoon, with angry students and parents violently protesting against a teacher, who allegedly molested five girls.
38-year-old Vijay Kumar, who was later arrested, is a resident of Sonepat in Haryana.
“According to at least five students, Kumar, and three to four boys, who do not study at the school, had recently sexually assaulted five female students inside the premises,” said a police officer, adding that the teacher has been booked for molestation and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
Parents, who had gathered outside the institute around 10am on Tuesday, claimed the agitation turned violent after the principal did not take their complaint seriously. Some pushing and shoving ensued, resulting in the angry mob pelting the school building with stones, during the course of which two police vehicles were damaged, and six personnel wounded.
“We have arrested 23 persons, including five women, and a case of rioting has been lodged against them,” the officer said, adding that two policemen had received serious injuries and were undergoing treatment.
