THE LATEST promotion list for eight KGMU associate professors rubbed many doctors on the wrong, who gheraoed varsity authorities to seek explanation on Wednesday.

THE LATEST promotion list for eight KGMU associate professors rubbed many doctors on the wrong, who gheraoed varsity authorities to seek explanation on Wednesday.

When a group of teachers questioned the rationale of promoting only eight associate professors as professors despite their having joined in 1998, the authorities quoted, ‘Proforma Promotions.’ Teachers entered in to verbal dual with several seniors on campus and have decided to take the matter to the Chancellor.

At least a dozen teachers gheraod the KGMU senior administrative officials and inveighed against the promotions. They alleged that promotions were undue and biased. They quoted the office order signed by the registrar and questioned the date of eligibility given to these promoted teachers. The verbal battle started when the group of teachers at first reached office of the registrar Prof US Pandey, then the vice chancellor Prof Mahendra Bhandari and finally the office of the dean faculty of medicine, Dr SK Agrawal.

The office order dated April 17 has awarded promotions to eight faculty members, as per the decision taken in the Executive Council meeting held on December 8, 2005. Seven of them have been given the date of eligibility from 1999 while one from 2002. The teachers alleged that since these promotes had got their posts converted from Casualty Medical Officer (CMO) to that of Lecturer back in 1998, promotions to the posts of professor can not come from 1999.

As per the rules followed by the KGMU one has to spend three years as Lecturer before being promoted as Assistant Professor. To become Associate Professor one has to spend four years as Assistant Professor. Another four years are required on the post of Associate Professor to become Professor. MCI however, allows promotion to the post of Professor even after two years of experience on the post of Associate Professor. But all these years have to be spent working in a recognized medical college.

Teachers have decided to take the matter to the chancellor’s office on Thursday to get of the office order repealed. “What is this proforma promotion? When ever we ask for promotion we are advised to wait for Selection Committee interview and these teachers have been given proforma promotion which does not even exists in the KGMU Act,” said an irate teacher.
