The Central Secretariat-Mandi House section of the Delhi Metro will be opened for commercial services from Thursday noon.
The much awaited metro section, which is a part of the planned Central Secretariat-Kashemere Gate corridor, will be officially flagged off from the Mandi House Metro station at 9.30 am by Union Minister of Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu.
The corridor is an extension of the already operational 22-km Badarpur-Central Secretariat (violet) line. The section that is opening on Thursday is entirely underground and consists of two stations at Janpath and Mandi House. Though the section will be opened to the public noon, metro’s Line 3(Dwarka sector 21 to Vaishali/Noida City Centre) will remain operational from the morning itself.
This new section, which will prove to be an alternative link between Line 2 (Jahangirpuri to Huda City Centre) and Line 3, is expected to take some load off the congested Rajiv Chowk station.
Though the construction of this stretch was completed by March, the safety inspection of the section was carried out only on June 10 by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). According to sources, the CMRS had raised a few issues, which were eventually addressed.
