Newspaper owner, two others killed in Agra

india Updated: Jan 31, 2007 15:13 IST

The editor of Taj Times newspaper who was known for publishing magazines that dwelt on sex has been murdered at his home in Agra along with his wife and a servant, police said.

Pandit Kali Charan Sharma, 70, owner and editor of the daily, and the others were found strangled in the New Agra area, close to the Delhi-Kolkata highway.

Police said the crime appeared to be the handiwork of a gang. The deceased's son has, however, been taken into custody for questioning.

The Sharma family ran "sexy magazines" that were often banned, before the advent of Internet pornography. His magazines were circulated all over the country.

Sharma had two sons. He married for a second time a nurse in the late 1960s.

"It looks like the result of some family dispute," a police official said. Gold ornaments worth Rs 400,00-500,000 were found missing from the house.
