Expressing concern over the poor condition of the town's facilities, Anil Paba, president of local NGO Udhampur Development Council (UDC) on Friday demanded the construction of a yatri bhawan (accommodation for travelers) on the back of Devika river to enable Devaknagari to serve as a base camp for Amarnath pilgrims, besides repair and provision of civic facilities.
Addressing mediapersons, UDC's general secretary Parvesh Parihar said the roads in the town were broken and the sanitation system was in shambles, which was creating hardships for the residents in the rainy season.
"Many precious lives have been lost in accidents caused by lack of footpaths and streetlights, especially at chowks, in various parts of the city," he alleged.
Paba added overhead bridges were required at several points, including MH Chowk, Venus Chowk, Happy Model School (near Shiv Nagar, Omara), Army Public School senior wing crossing and Housing Colony crossing, due to the presence of heavy traffic in these spots.
Alleging that the authorities concerned had failed to demarcate land for parking in spite of repeated demands, Paba said the girls hr sec, school gole market could be shifted to some other location and parking area created in its place.
