A 35-year-old NGO worker of Katra Sahadatganj village of Badaun was allegedly gangraped and robbed by four men on Tuesday. The village had hit headlines last year when two sisters were found hanging from a tree.
The woman was returning to the village after attending the last rites of her aunt, police said, when four men allegedly overpowered and raped her. Later they also robbed her of Rs 50,000 which the woman had borrowed from her sister.
While two of the accused have been identified as Shyam Singh and Omkar, the identities of the other two accused are yet to be confirmed, police said.
"All the accused are still at large but police are trying to arrest them as soon as possible. We are just waiting for the medical reports of the victim and our teams are raiding possible hideouts to arrest the accused,” said superintendent of police (city) Anil Yadav on Thursday.
Incidentally, the woman had been actively involved in protesting against the deaths of the two girls in May last year. However, the police have denied any links with the previous incident, saying that they did not have any such information.
Last year on May 27, two teenage sisters were found hanging from a tree, following which a case was registered against seven people for rape and murder. The incident was reported widely and the case was given to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which eventually gave a clean chit to the accused and concluded that the girls had committed suicide.
