One of the 12 most wanted in the National Investigation Agency (NIA)’s probe of the Burdwan blast — Sahanur Alom alias ‘Doctor’ — was once again able to escape from the police dragnet.
This time, the Jaamat –ul- Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) operative fooled police in Dhubri district on Wednesday. “We have missed him by a whisker.
All concerned agencies have been alerted about his presence in the district,” said Mridulananda Sarmah, SP, Dhubri district. Police arrested two aides of Sahanur from the Hatsingimari area in Dhubri on Wednesday.
For the past three days, NIA and Assam police raided several places after receiving intelligence inputs about the JMB operative’s presence in the district.
“Before we reached the house where Sahanur stayed, he escaped from the village. We suspect the JMB operative came to know about our move to cordon the village,” said Sarmah.
Sahanur was spotted in Guwahati in first week of November. His wife revealed to the police that Sahanur was in the state since the blast and both managed to escape to Guwahati in second week of October.
Sahanur Alom, who was one of the top operatives of JMB’s sleeper cell in Assam, has been absconding since the Burdwan blast.
Though police have arrested his wife Sujina Begum, the NIA’s most wanted from the state remains elusive.
