When news that one of Mumbai’s oldest nightclubs, Enigma, was shutting down surfaced a few months ago, the city thought it had lost yet another party spot for good.
But this Friday, on January 11, the hotspot is making a return, completely revamped and redesigned. Still called Enigma, the space is being relaunched as what the hotel authorities call a “lifestyle and entertainment destination”. It is no longer only a nightclub.
“You could start your evening here with a stand-up comedy show or an art exhibit and then take it into a full blown party. It is now a space for unplugged gigs, international acts and DJs,” says Gagandeep Singh, director of operations, JW Marriott, which houses Enigma.
In the last few months, the venue was completely broken down and rebuilt. It now accommodates a bar, a few private areas and ample open space. Unlike earlier, when patrons had to walk out of the hotel to smoke, the space now also has an accessible open area. This is the third time the club has been renovated.
“The city has a few nightclubs, but it misses spaces for live acts. That’s the idea. The venue is even equipped to have formal meetings in the mornings, but in the evenings it is open to entertainment options,” Singh says, adding, “We didn’t want to typecast it as a nightclub or lounge.”
Soon, the management will provide the city access to a calendar with information on what’s happening at the venue for the next two weeks. “It will be available on our Facebook page, which, along with Twitter, will be our mediums to communicate,” says Singh.
However, the deadline for the venue, even though it is located within the hotel, will remain 1.30 am. Ask Singh what the gigs are going to be priced at, and he says, “It is going to be dynamic. We may sometimes charge something between Rs 1,500 or Rs 3,000 as cover charge depending on the events. But the entry will always be set purely to justify the economics of the event.”
