The government on Wednesday issued a showcause notice to Nimbus, sports broadcaster, for not sharing live feed of India-Sri Lanka series with Doordarshan. Nimbus has been providing the feed of the cricket matches with seven-minute delay, a violation that could lead to suspension of its license or fine of Rs one crore.
The notice comes a day ahead of hearing in the Delhi High Court where The Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharti) Ordinance 2007 stands challenged by the Nimbus Communications. The Ordinance, that makes sharing of cricket feed with DD mandatory, was notified before the start of India-Sri Lanka cricket series.
The hearing is at the final stage as both, Prasar Bharti and Nimbus, have almost finished their submissions to a division bench headed by Justice Vikramjit Sen.
"We have asked them to showcause why action may not be taken against them under section 3 and 4 of the Ordinance. They have to reply by February 15," a senior official of I&B ministry, said.
