At least nine people, including five school students, were killed and 30 others injured on Tuesday when their bus fell into a gorge in the district, police said in Dehradun.
The incident took place when the driver of the bus, which was enroute to Tuni from Vikasnagar, skidded into the gorge in Koti area, they said.
While four people died instantly, five others succumbed to injuries on their way to hospital, they said, adding there were around 50-60 passengers inside the bus when the incident took place.
The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital which referred those injured seriously to government Doon Hospital in Dehradun.
Uttarakhand Governor B L Joshi and Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank expressed grief over the accident with the latter ordering a magisterial probe into it.
Nishank also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 25,000 to those sustaining grave injuries and Rs 5000 to those with minor injuries.
