Nine members of a family, including five children, were killed in a road accident near Gillakhera village on National Highway 10 in Fatehabad on Monday morning. Among the victims were two brothers, their wives and their five children. They were on their way back after attending a satsang at Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsa.

The victims have been identified as Jitender (42), his wife Saroj (38) and daughters Simran (9), Astha (5), Shruti (3) and Surender (38), his wife Sangita (35), daughter Kashish (8) and son Ayush (6).

Surender was driving the Hyundai Ascent car. When they reached near Gillakhera village at around 7am, the car rammed into a truck coming from the opposite direction. All the nine occupants of the car died on the spot.

Police said that the car was trying to overtake another vehicle when the mishap took place. The truck driver has been arrested.

Passersby rushed to the spot and informed the police. Police said it took more than an hour to extricate the bodies out of the mangled car.

Traffic on the highway was disrupted for half-an-hour after the mishap.

Local MLA PS Gillakhera, Hisar range commissioner MP Bansal, IG AS Chawla, deputy commissioner ML Kaushik and SP Satinder Kumar Gupta were at the site.

“Prima facie it appears that the car was being driven rashly leading to the accident. However, investigations are on and we are collecting pieces of information from the eye-witnesses,” Fatehabad SP SK Gupta said.
