After the BJP played the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel card to drive a wedge into JD (U)'s base in chief minister Nitish Kumar's own turf last month, Kumar unveiled a life-size statue of the Iron man in Nalanda on Saturday.

Post NDA split, the BJP had begun its campaign from Nalanda last month, appealing to the people to liberally donate farming tools, such as sickles, hoes, hedge clippers and others to ensure that a grand statue of Sardar Patel comes up in Gujarat after its chief minister, Narendra Modi's dreams.

Narendra Modi, who is also the BJP's campaign committee chairman for the 2014 elections, has announced the erection of a gigantic statue of Sardar Patel in Gujarat with iron implements collected from all parts of the country.

Unveiling the statue on the premises of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel College at Biharsharif, Kumar said, he was privileged to unveil the statue of the Iron Man, who had impressed Mahatma Gandhi by his remarkable organizing capacity.

He also announced a Rs 1 crore grant to the college for the construction of the administrative building of the college, additional classrooms to meet the requirement of nearly 4000-odd students. The government had already given a grant of Rs 45 lakh earlier for the science block, he said.

“Since the college is named after Sardar Patel, it should run properly and create a niche for itself in the academic and sporting activities. The government will soon send a team of engineers for the construction of a quake-resistant college building,” he added.

On this occasion, he also inaugurated the girls' hostel on the college premises. Later, Kumar inaugurated the annexe building of the Biharsharif circuit house.

Several party leaders and legislators were present on the occasion.
