The JD(U) has elected its new president in its National Council meeting, bringing an end to the over 10-year long tenure of Sharad Yadav, who decided not to seek a fourth consecutive term.

Yadav, who had been serving as the party chief for the last three terms, resigned from the post on Sunday and is unlikely to contest for a fourth term.
According to reports, the JD (U) is planning an expansion before Uttar Pradesh assembly polls that will be held next year and Nitish Kumar has been unanimously selected to lead the party.
