A week after communal violence gripped Khandwa, the city limped back to normalcy on Wednesday. The district administration relaxed the curfew for 16 hours - from 6am to 10pm on Wednesday.
The administration has decided to completely lift the curfew from 6am on Thursday. "Seeing the situation, we have decided to completely lift the curfew from 6am on Thursday but section 144 will remain in force in the city till next orders. The situation is returning to normal. We had relaxed curfew on Wednesday too. Meanwhile, heavily armed police and paramilitary forces are deployed on streets across the town to keep a strict vigil on any untoward incident," said Khandwa SP Manoj Sharma.
District administration took out a peace march in the city to appeal people to maintain brotherhood, peace and harmony. The peace march was flagged off by Khandwa DM Shilpa Gupta and SP Manoj Sharma and they were also present in the march, which started from Municipal Corporation square. After passing through different thoroughfares, the march ended at Municipal Corporation square.
Government employees, community leaders, business and social organisations as well as non-government employees took part in the march. However, public representatives did not take part.
Talking to HT, city qazi Sayed Ansar Ali said the police should arrest the unidentified people soon who were involved in the violence. "I appeal to the citizens of Khandwa to maintain peace, harmony and brotherhood in the city," he said.
