With reference to Jagmohan’s article ‘Demolishing myth’, I do not know why he is defending the indefensible. Today he is saying the entire Turkman Gate demolition was a fabrication. Tomorrow he may say that the Emergency itself was a fabrication. I reproduce below what the Shah Commission of Inquiry said in its report:

“...Proper procedures laid down under the Act had not been followed in this case and even administrative action like carrying out a survey of the area, checking of records etc. was not done before embarking on this operation. The evidence of the residents of the area proves that there was no element of voluntariness involved in this operation and the area was cleared by coercion and force. This is supported by the presence of a large police contingent which was kept in attendance throughout. Shri H K Lal, a land inspector and Shri Jagmohan have shown scant respect for the rights of others and have misused their authority on a massive scale. In the process they were the cause of considerable human misery which could well have been avoided. The demolitions insofar as they concerned the unacquired and private properties were done without observing the processes of law ...”
