“I am ready” is what a calm and composed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had told his doctors before going for the coronary artery bypass surgery at AIIMS on Saturday.
Asked what Singh had said before the 14-hour long operation, Sampath Kumar, head of the department, cardiac surgery, told reporters that before he was given anaesthesia, the 76-year-old Prime Minister said “I am ready”.
Singh was calm and composed and fully conscious of the expertise of the surgical team, S Reddy, another cardiac surgeon who was part of the doctors’ team, said.
PM’s look-alike lands up at AIIMS
The waiting media as well as the security personnel posted at AIIMS were taken by surprise when his look-alike walked in, dressed in the same manner as the PM himself.
Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Jungpura, walked into the hospital dressed in the trademark blue turban, white kurta pyjama and a blue Nehru jacket.
“I have come here to wish our Prime Minister. I hope and pray that the operation becomes successful,” Gurmeet said.
As he made his way through the cameras and surprised on-lookers, Gurmeet was stopped by the Special Protection Group, which exclusively guards the Prime Minister and his family.
Gurmeet, while leaving the hospital, said: “I hope to meet him after he gets well and is back in action.”
