The Election Commission on Tuesday made it clear that there was no possibility of advancing the assembly elections in West Bengal due next May and said no party has approached it with such a demand.

"There is no possibility of advancing the assembly elections in the state. Election will be held on time. No political party has made such a demand for advancing the polls to the Commission," Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi said here.

Quraishi, who along with Election Commissioner V S Sampath arrived here on a 'routine visit', said the poll date would be announced in time.

During their two-day visit, they would meet state officials and electoral officers to discuss revision of the electoral rolls, maintenance of EVMs and other issues.

Quraishi said they would also meet Governor M K Narayanan.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has demanded advancement of assembly elections in the state in view of successive poll defeats by the CPI(M)-led Left Front.
