The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea by Forward Bloc MP from Purulia Bir Singh Mahato seeking stay on his conviction and 10 year imprisonment awarded to him in a 1982 rape case.

Mahato's lawyer mentioned the petition before a vacation bench headed by Justice BP Singh in which the MP had also sought permission to attend the Parliament.

His counsel said though the appeal against the conviction was lying in the High Court, he was approaching the apex court for seeking permission to attend the Parliament.

A Purulia court on May 12 convicted Mahato and three others for the gangrape of a woman and sentenced them to 10 years RI and fined them Rs 5,000 each.
