No stopping top seeds Matthew, Nicol in squash

England were guaranteed medals in the singles event of squash as top seed Nick Matthew and women’s second seed Jenny Duncalf moved into the finals on Friday. In all-English semifinals, Matthew beat third seed Peter Barker 11-9, 11-2, 11-9, while Duncalf defeated third seed Alison Waters 11-6, 12-10, 11-9. Moonmoon Ghosh reports

England were guaranteed medals in the singles event of squash as top seed Nick Matthew and women’s second seed Jenny Duncalf moved into the finals on Friday. In all-English semifinals, Matthew beat third seed Peter Barker 11-9, 11-2, 11-9, while Duncalf defeated third seed Alison Waters 11-6, 12-10, 11-9.

In the other semis, world champion Nicol David thumped Australia’s Kasey Brown 11-6, 11-3, 11-3, and England’s James Willstrop had no problem in getting past sixth-seeded Malaysian Azlan Iskandar 11-4, 11-7, 11-5.

Matthew, aiming to win his first medal here, said, “I’ve got better each match and I had to. The competition has got tougher.”
Barker, who will now face Iskandar in the bronze medal play-off, said, “I hope I win it.”
