In a crackdown against unauthorised liquor restaurants in the city, the district excise department officials sealed a bar in the up market of Sector 18 on Thursday and arrested eight people.
The officials conducted a raid at Huqqa Bar after complaints that the bar was serving alcohol to its customers without obtaining a licence from the excise department, the officials said.
According to district excise officer Kuldeep Yadav, some officials of his department are suspected to be helping such bars operate in the city.
"We were getting complaints about illegal bars running in the city. Last night, officials found that liquor was being served at Huqqa Bar. When asked, the bar staff failed to show the licence," Kuldeep Yadav, district excise officer, told HT.
The bar staff said that they used to get occasional licences for serving liquor during some parties. For regular bar licence, they had applied for a commercial licence and the process was on.
The district excise officer said that several bars have been misusing occasional licence, which is meant for non-commercial liquor distribution at private parties.
"Commercial serving of liquor is not allowed on occasional licences. Several bars are misusing the licence," Yadav, adding that such bars are operating in connivance with some excise department officials.
"Officers indulged in such activities may be suspended," Yadav said.
