Your survey (Delhi has zero confidence in MCD, May 8) rightly focuses on the MCD as the source of most wrongdoing in the city. However, residents too cannot escape blame. Those who collaborated with builders and made illegal buildings have no right to ask why they were not stopped earlier. It amounts to claiming that we are free to commit a crime unless stopped.

If what Harsh Mander alleges (Rubble-rousers, May 8) is even partially true, it must send alarm bells ringing for our democracy and secularism. The government cannot afford to take sides on issues that affect communal amity and security.

The author has exposed the sinister communal designs of the Modi government. This time, the hawks could not do much because the media and secular-minded citizens were vigilant. But the Centre cannot sit idle. It must act firmly.
In the name of art
With reference to None of your business (May 8) you defend Husain’s right to paint goddesses as he pleases. But Husain is deliberately hurting the sentiments of a section of society, and misusing his artistic licence.

Strike a balance
It is good to know that the ICC has allowed teams to appeal to the third umpire thrice in a match. Sachin Tendulkar, too, has been a victim of the wrong decisions. But ground umpires should not be made dummies in the process. This move will increase pressure on them. But teams should use it only in extreme cases.
