At the young age of 19, Mumbai lad Bhavin Turakhia founded a technology-centric company, with the focus on developing volume-based Web products and services for a global audience. Called DirectI, the company started with an employee strength of around three people. That was 1998.
Circa 2006. Eight years later, DirectI employs around 250 people and represents the largest web services group in India and south-east Asia in terms of clients, revenue and growth serving customers in over 230 countries.
The group, along with five business units under its umbrella serves 80 per cent of the Indian web services market and has over 80,000 channel partners all over the world. The DirectI Group was also the first .IN accredited domain name registrar all over India and is the largest .IN registrar in the country today. Over 41 per cent of all .IN domain names registered in India are customers of DirectI.
A product of Arya Vidya Mandir and Sydenham College, 26-year-old Turakhia always wanted to start something on his own. A love for computers made his decision to get into web products/services a lot easier. "I even used to run a bulletin board service (BBS) from home for a year. But, I was so fascinated with networking that I decided to make a career of it," he says.
And what started with 40 clients has now reached the astronomical figure of one million. Turakhia is also the inventor of WebHosting.Info, an innovative statistics portal about the Web Hosting industry, and leads the technology team at WebHosting.Info.
He has written several papers on e-commerce trends, and has spoken at various seminars across the globe on topics ranging from advertising on the Internet, to infrastructure and e-commerce related issues. He also serves as a technical advisor to the Indian CyberCrime Investigation Cell and is Member of the NASSCOM CyberCop committee.
Turakhia is also one of the founding members of INDRA - association of .IN Domain Registrars, which is a fledgling concept formulated by him and other .IN Registrars. He has been responsible for drafting the objectives of INDRA and spearheading the effort of fulfilling them through the association. He has won several awards, including the Bharti Entrepreneur of the year award in 2005.
Under his leadership, DirectI was ranked 10th in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 India programme 2005. Coming to the future, Turakhia says he wants to develop 25-30 more different products and become the largest player in the field worldwide.
But what traits go into making of a successful entrepreneur? Says Turakhia, "First and foremost, you need a passion for work, ambition, confidence and most of all, a great team. Recruiting the right talent is very important. A venture succeeds when you start it at the right time, the right place with the right people."
Nothing speaks like success!
