Notorious dacoit escapes, three cops held

A wanted dacoit escaped from police custody by jumping from a moving train near Haridwar following which three policemen were arrested on charges of dereliction of duty, police said.

A wanted dacoit escaped from police custody by jumping from a moving train near Haridwar following which three policemen were arrested on charges of dereliction of duty, police said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when Shakil Kalia alias Rahul alias Vakil, head of Kalia gang, was being taken back to Doon jail in Kathgodam Express after a court hearing in Haldwani town of Nainital district, they said. When the train reached near Luxor railway station, the undertrial jumped out of the train, pushing the policemen escorting him.

Later, the head constable Gopal Ram and constables Manoj and Tausib Ahmed pulled the chain to stop the train and informed the Senior Superintendent of Police about the matter, they said. Dehra Dun Senior Superintendent of Police Abhinav Kumar have suspended three policemen on charges of dereliction of duty.

All the three cops have also been arrested. Kalia, a resident of Meerut, against whom dozens of cases of loot and dacoity have been registered was arrested along with seven other members of his gang in Haldwani by Uttarakhand police nearly two months ago after an encounter.
