Close on the heels of Congress MP Y Jaganmohan Reddy's controversial 'Odarpu Yatra', the party's leaders from Telangana region have decided to undertake a yatra of their own to console families of "persons who laid down their lives for the cause of a separate state."
The tour, which will begin at Ramagundam in Karimnagar district on October 2, is meant to console the victims' families and extend financial assistance.
"This will be done on our own behalf. The Congress party has nothing to do with our tour. Every MLA has come forward to contribute one month's salary, while each MP will donate Rs 2 lakh for distribution to the victims' families," MPs G Vivekananda and K Rajagopal Reddy told newsmen at the end of a meeting of the Telangana Congress leaders in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Medchal MLA K Laxma Reddy announced his contribution of Rs 10 lakh for the victims' families.
"Apart from our contributions, we will also seek donations from philanthropists for the cause," they added.
Rajya Sabha member and Congress Central Working Committee member K Keshava Rao chaired the meeting. Ministers from Telangana, however, remained conspicuous by their absence.
Congress MPs Forum convenor Ponnam Prabhakar too did not attend the meeting as he was busy taking part in some programmes in his Karimnagar constituency.
The meeting decided to press the demand for constitution of a separate Pradesh Congress Committee for Telangana.
