Months after senior IAS officer Amarjeet Sinha joined the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry as additional secretary, Technical Education (September 2014), he was divested of the charge on Tuesday. The 1983 batch Bihar cadre officer will look after statistic division, a comparatively insignificant portfolio.
The move elicited sharp reactions in the corridors of the ministry as Sinha was considered to be a highly efficient officer and was said to have a significant role in clearing pending appointments in higher educational institutions including IITs and IIMs as well as rolling out choice based credit system.
While the order, which was issued on late Tuesday evening, has been called a routine one, sources in the ministry said Sinha and HRD minister Smriti Irani were not on the same page on a number of issues including crucial appointments in a number of institutions.
The move also comes close on the heels of repatriation of another officer in the ministry to his parent cadre last week. Nagesh Singh who was economic advisor in the ministry was sent back to economic services.
Earlier a number of officers at the joint secretary level including Veenaish, and Praveen Prakash sought repatriation to their parent cadres before their terms got over.
Sinha has served in the Bihar government in the capacity of principal secretary, education, before he was transferred to the social welfare department in the same capacity in June.
An alumnus of St Stephens, Sinha has as many as seven books to his credit.
Sinha refused to comment on the issue when contacted by HT.
