Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is planning to set up another nuclear power plant, about 50 kms from the existing Kaiga plant, activists claimed on Saturday.
A meeting of environmentalists and anti-nuclear power movement activists alleged that people living around the Kaiga nuclear plant were already suffering from various ailments, including cancer, due to radiation effect.
The activists said they would oppose the move to construct the new nuclear plant.
Environmentalist Y B Ramakrishna flayed the NPCIL for not making public the report of the recent fire mishap in the third unit of the Kaiga nuclear power plant, which was shut down temporarily.
The third unit was shut down on April 8 after a fire alarm went off. Authorities later declared the plant safe and said the level of radiation was below the prescribed standards. The unit was restarted on April 19.
The meeting was attended by Sri Gangadharendra Saraswati Swamiji of Swarnavalli Mahasansthan of Sonda, president of the Kaiga Nagarika Prishilana Samithi Vasanth Hegde and Western Ghat Protection Committee president Anant Hege Ashishara.
