Local police have booked a US-based NRI for fraud and forgery. The accused, Sohanjit Singh of nearby Rampur Sunra village falling under Rawalpindi police station, is now in the US and has abandoned his NRI wife Narinderjit Kaur as well as his 5-year old son.
His passport has also been impounded.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Surinder Kaur, aunt of the victim Narinderjit, said that she had filed a complaint with the Police regarding the fake documents used by Sohanjit to get an Indian passport made.
In her complaint, she said that Sohanjit Singh was a Passport holder of Tehran. His Passport (P-852561) was issued on August 19, 1997 and it had expired on August 18, 2007. In it, he had shown Chandigarh as his place of birth and had showed his name as Sohanjit. He, along with his family used to live in Tehran only.
However, he got a second Passport made from the Jalandhar Passport office, without giving the information of his existing Passport which had not expired then.
The new passport (F-6919427) was issued on March 13, 2006 and is valid upto March 12, 2016. In it, he showed his village as Ucha in Jalandhar district as his place of birth and his name as Sohanjit Singh.
In order to get the new Passport made, Sohnajit Singh procured a fake class 7 school leaving certificate and a fake ration card affixed with photographs of fake family members.
With all these false documents, he got married in 2005 to US-based Narinderjit Kaur.
After the marriage, Sohanjit also went to the US with her.
Surinder Kaur said, “After reaching there, his attitude towards his wife and son changed completely. One day, he suddenly decided to come to India all alone. When we probed the matter on his arrival in India, it came out that he was having an extra marital affair.”
When the family members brought the issue of dual passport and fake documents to the notice of Jalandhar Passport Office, they issued a show cause notice to Shonajit.
“When he received the show cause notice, he flew back to the US the very next day and went to his relative’s home in the US and didn’t go to his wife,” continued Surinder Kaur.
She further said, “After that he sent divorce papers to Narinderjit and also told her to keep their son.”
Later, when Sohanjit did not report to the Jalandhar Passport Office, his Passport was impounded.
When contacted, DSP Sandeep Sharma said, “ The accused is in the US and we will start the proceedings against him. He will be declared Proclaimed Offender (PO) if he fails to report.”
