In an example of gross neglect and carelessness, a nurse administered acid drops instead of vitamin A drops to two infants at Selotwar village under Tiroda Tahsil in Gondia district, some 150 kms from here in east Vidarbha, during a health camp organised by the district health department on Wednesday.

The condition of both - Muskan Meshram (18 months) and Chakradhar Bhede (7 months) who suffered severe mouth ulcer and internal injuries - is stated to be serious.

Initially, the infants were admitted to the local civil hospital at Tumsar. But when their health deteriorated, they were shifted to a private nursing home at Nagpur on Saturday.

Dinesh Meshram, father of Muskan, said that his daughter started crying immediately after the nurse, Alisha Khobragade, administered her acetic acid drop instead of vitamin A drop.

“We do not understand why the nurse gave the acid to our children instead of vitamin drops? It was sheer negligence on the part of the health department and the authorities should take an appropriate action against the concerned nurse,” he said.

The sub-divisional medical officer of Tirdoa, Dr CR Tembhurne, admitted that the prima facie evidences said that the nurse had given acetic acid instead of vitamin A drop to the children.

The district health office ordered an inquiry into the incident and assured the parents of both the children that they would bear the expenses of the infants’ treatment.

“We will initiate an appropriate action against the concerned nurse if she is found guilty,” Dr Tembhurne further said.
