Beatles and their wives have always made a dodgy combination. If it wasn’t Yoko who led John astray from his true love (Paul), then it was Linda who led Paul up a distinctly un-Beatles path (vegetarianism and jingles masquerading as pop songs). So when we find Paul McCartney in the news for slashing his ex-wife Heather Mills’ divorce settlement by £ 43 million — down from £ 50 million to a paltry £ 7 million — apart from our ‘Beatles-wives’ theory being confirmed again, we can hear Macca singing in our heads: “You never give me your money/You only give me your funny paper/And in the middle of negotiations/You break down.”
The tone of Paul’s voice in our heads must be ironic, considering he’s the one complaining about getting no money in it. But it would be pertinent to point out that Ms Mills is the one who seems to have broken down in the middle of a messy divorce. Apart from her saying on telly that Paul was to blame for the break-up, that Stella (McCartney’s and the late Linda’s daughter) was “evil” and that she felt as trapped in the marriage as ‘Princess Diana’, Mills apparently has evidence to suggest that Paul used viagra and mocked her disability (she lost a leg in an accident) while in the marriage.
But it probably is something else that has made one of Britain’s richest blokes cut and run with his quids. Heather is urging people to drink milk from rats and dogs to help save the planet. As the chorus of Paul’s most famous song goes: “Na, na na, na na na na, na na na na....”
