Atmaja, a four-month-old girl child left behind in the hospital by her parents since birth in Bhubaneshwar, will finally go home.

The couple had refused to take her along after her birth alleging that the hospital authorities had swapped their 'boy’ with her.

However, the Odisha high court on Friday asked the couple to take her home on the basis of a DNA test, which not only ruled out Atmaja being their daughter but also confirmed the 'boy’ was not their son.

PK Panda, lawyer for the couple, said the couple would obey the order of the court.

"I will get my girl home," said Rashmita Mallick (25), the mother of the girl.

On March 30, Mallick was admitted in SCB Medical College in Cuttack after labour pain.

Someone informed her family that she had delivered a boy, but later hospital authorities said it was a girl, thereby kicking off a controversy.

The family alleged the hospital authorities had swapped another woman’s girl child with Rashmita’s 'boy’ and left the hospital without the hapless girl child.

The matter needed the intervention of Odisha high court, which directed a DNA test of the girl, the boy and both the mothers.

While the hospital authorities sent their samples to a Hyderabad based laboratory, hospital staff took care of the girl child, named her Atmaja and celebrated when she became 21 days old, as it is done in Odia homes.
