The Odisha police have arrested a laboratory technician of a state-run hospital on charges of molesting a woman by posing as a doctor.
The 28-year-old woman was recuperating in the gynaecology ward of SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack after giving birth to a girl on August 4.
The accused allegedly entered the ward — a “prohibited area” — in the early hours of Tuesday in an inebriated state and started examining the 28-year-old woman, the police said.
The woman got suspicious and raised an alarm as the man touched her private parts. A security guard and the nurse on duty nabbed the accused. “We have arrested the junior laboratory technician on the basis of a complaint by the nurse,” said Seikh Sarifuddin, inspector in-charge of Mangalabag police station.
The hospital authorities have suspended the 45-year-old accused and started an inquiry. Hospital superintendent S Kanungo said steps would be taken to ensure such incidents did not recur. “We are trying to find out how he managed to enter the prohibited area in the dead of the night.”
The SCB Hospital in Cuttack, about 30 km east of Bhubaneswar, is among the top healthcare facilities in Odisha.
