A lady doctor has been arrested in Bhubaneswar for allegedly stealing fancy items from shops in the city.

When police visited the residence of Dr Kalyani, a dentist by profession and from a well-to-do family, in Khandagiri area of the city on Wednesday, they stumbled upon a pile of fancy items allegedly stolen from malls, boutiques and shops in the city.

“We have arrested Dr Kalyani and her mother Kusum Prusty (50) on the basis of a complaint by an owner of a boutique,” Shaheed Nagar police inspector Deepak Mishra said.

Dr Kalyani works in a private hospital in the city. Police said she and her mother admitted to have shoplifted in various malls, boutiques and shops for quite some time due to their “weakness” for fancy materials like sarees, dress materials and vanity bags.

The owner of a boutique, Puspaja Dhal, had lodged a complaint on June 11 alleging that the mother-daughter duo had visited her shop the previous day posing as customers and shoplifted three sarees and two suit pieces.

The police seized the close circuit television (CCTV) camera footage from the boutique and started an investigation. After zeroing in on Dr Kalyani and her mother, they raided their house in a posh area of Bhubaneswar.

The fancy items seized from their house are worth Rs 2 lakh and include 28 sarees, 165 vanity bags, 15 cloth pieces, 13 dresses, 51 undergarments and 15 mobile flip covers. The police also seized a scooter they used to ride to various shopping complexes.
