Police in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district have arrested a tribal man who allegedly killed his wife just because she could not conceive six years after marriage.
He was produced before a court in Rairangpur in the district, about 300km northwest of Bhubaneswar, on Friday evening. The court remanded him in 14-day judicial custody.
Police said Nuna Beshra (32) forcibly entered his father-in-law’s house in Chingidipokhari village, about 300km northeast of Bhubaneswar, on Thursday night and slit the throat of his wife, Kapura Hembrum (22), with a sharp edged weapon while she was asleep. She died on the spot.
Beshra also severely injured his mother-in-law, Metal Hembrum (50), who tried to intervene, before fleeing. Police arrested him a day later from a village bordering Jharkhand.
“Beshra confessed to the crime. We have recovered the murder weapon,” police station inspector in charge Ismile Ekka said.
In his complaint to police, Beshra’s father-in-law said for the past five years he had been torturing his daughter as she had been unable to conceive. Police said they were also investigating the villagers’ allegation that Beshra killed his wife to marry another woman in the hope that she would give birth to his children.
