AN ASSISTANT Manager of the Social Welfare Department was caught red - handed, accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 by the sleuths of the state’s Anti Corruption department just outside the Vikas bhawan here.
The arrested official has been identified as Digvijaya Mishra. The accused had demanded the bribe to continue the allotment of a governmental shed in the industrial area of Ramnagar.
The Deputy SP for Anti-Corruption Nand Lal Yadav said acting on a complaint of a man of city’s Nagwa area, Paras Nath Choudhry, a trap was laid by the department to arrest the corrupt official on Tuesday.
He said the social welfare department owned 10 sheds in the industrial area that had been allotted to some persons. The complainant, Choudhry, who also owned a shed on a 90-year lease, recently, came to know that the department was going to cancel allotment of five such sheds.
When he made an enquiry in this connection, an official told him that the allotment of his shed would be also cancelled. The complainant urged the official to do him a favour.
The official then asked him for a bribe of Rs 5,000 but the deal was finalised at Rs 2,000.
The money was to be paid outside the office of the official at Kuchehri on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the complainant also brought the matter to the official of Anti Corruption department.
Soon after the complaint, the sleuths swung into action and laced the currency of Rs 2,000 with chemical to be given by the complainant to the official. As the man handed over the money to the official, he was immediately nabbed publicly.
