Officials accused of embezzlement

india Updated: Nov 17, 2006 16:16 IST

ACCUSING THE State Archaeology Department officials of embezzling crores of rupees allotted for Rajwada renovation, Ward No. 16 corporator Raju Kuwal today demanded immediate removal of the guilty officials entrusted with the overhaul of the heritage building.

Kuwal also staged a demonstration in front of Rajwada building in support of his demand and later submitted a memorandum demanding dismissal of the officials. He accused the Archaeology Department officials of lining their pockets with renovation funds and claimed that a “free and impartial” probe would substantiate his charges.

While Indore has witnessed a remarkable development in different fields, Rajwada, the symbol of City’s pride remains neglected, Kuwal said.

Years after the renovation amount was sanctioned, the makeover of the heritage structure is yet to be completed, he said. Why the State Archaeology Department has taken so long in completing the job, Kuwal queried in a written statement issued today.

He also accused the in-charge Director of attempting to cover up the fiscal misdeeds by refusing to hand over information sought under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. A written request was submitted to the official for info on the total amount sanctioned for Rajwada renovation and the money spent so far, but he failed to furnish a reply.

Kuwal also wondered why, given the many heritage sites here, the department was being handled by an in-charge Director who rarely visited the City and called for a permanent directorial appointment to oversee historic sites in Indore.
