Some wept, some could not sleep for rest of the night, some became listless and philosophical while a smaller number began cracking jokes in the cyber world – citizens of Kolkata, who go crazy over their eternal favourite Brazil, took different ways of coming to terms with the shock that emanated from the television screens on the wee hours of Wednesday.

From offices to markets, public transport to roadside stalls, none seemed to discuss anything else but the shocking drubbing of Brazil at the hands of Germany.

"We had lost all hopes when Neymar was knocked out in the quarter finals. But we never imagined that the team would be shamed in such a way in the semis," said Dibyendu Saha, the secretary of Bhawanipore Youth Club.

Members of the club that counts among its neighbours, sports minister Madan Mitra, watch all the matches on a television. Some of the members also support Argentina, and have decided not to watch the finals should the men in blue and white lose too.

The state's sport minister seemed to epitomize the feelings of most of the citizens.

"I am shattered. I am yet to decide whether I shall watch football matches anymore. It bacem clear last night what a fulcrum of the team Neymar was. From my childhood we believed Brazil and Argentina have such talent that they can produce two teams each that can win the world cup anytime. But it was very unfortunate last night," said Madan Mitra in a gloomy voice.

Kolkata was rudely shocked even earlier, when in 1998 France bet Brazil in the finals, and in 1982 when a brilliant line-up of Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Junior lost to Italy. But none of those were so shattering as Wednesday's loss.

"I could not sleep the rest of the night. I have never missed any match of Brazil in the past few World Cups. The entire fun is gone," admitted Ayan Majhi, 34, known to be a Brazil fanatic in his locality. Majhi took a lot of efforts to erect cutouts of Brazil players in his locality in Shibpur.

"My boss Arunava Kar who went to Brazil to watch the host country win the cup, broke down on the phone. I have never heard him cry so inconsolably," said Prabir Pramanik, an employee of a real estate firm owner by Kar in Howrah. Kar went to Brazil on July 2.

"I won't be able to show my face in the neighbourhood. The entire locality is divided between Brazil and Argentina. We have pulled down the life size cutouts of Neymar and his team mates," said Jayanta Chakravarti, a resident of Konnagar in greater Kolkata.

Chakravarti, who is in his late twenties, had organised late night parties when Brazil used to play. The locality club, Chaitali Sangha has decided not to wake up for the remaining two matches.

Taalbagan Boy's Club that is located in a lane just next to Kasba Police Station wears a deserted look. Till Tuesday night, the entire area was aglow with green and yellow bulbs arranged along giant cutouts of Neymar. The bulbs won't be lit up from Wednesday, said the members.

Some turned on their acute sense of humour in the cyber world to vent their frustration. "I am an aren't fan of Brazil," said analytics professional Ajapa Gupta in an MNC who sent out on Watsapp, "Brazil jaise hari hai, unka dukh to sirf Congress hi samaj sakti hai."

"Buzz is that Tapas Pal aided Germany today – he let loose his own boys who raped Brazil," wrote Gautam Debnath, another mid-forties employee of an IT consultancy firm.
