Chief minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday inaugurated the valley's first exclusive football stadium at the TRC Polo Ground here with an imported synthetic football turf that will allow players to train round the year.
"Development of sports and nurturing the talent in different games is receiving full attention of the government. Various new stadia have been completed," said the chief minister.
The synthetic turf for the stadium has been procured from Limonta, Italy, and is laid over six layers of base course. The stadium has capacity of 15,000 spectators. The project came up at the cost of `4.50 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Abdullah said Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium is also being re-built and upgraded to the international standard to host national and international events in football and athletics.
"An amount of about `100 crore is being spent on this project and `100 crore is being spent on upgrading the M A M Stadium Jammu," he said.
The chief minister said sports talent in schools, colleges and universities is also being nurtured to develop the sportspersons of excellence in all the fields of sports.
"During the last six years, the sports personnel of Jammu and Kashmir have exhibited their excellence in different events at the national and international levels," he added.
Minister for youth services and sports Raman Bhalla, legislator Nasir Aslam Wani, commissioner secretary youth services and sports Khurshid Ahmad and director youth services and sports Dalip Thusoo were present on the occasion.
