On camera: 2 dead as speeding Chennai car throws pedestrians into air
Two people were killed when they were knocked down by a car in a residential locality in south Chennai on Tuesday night.
Two people were killed when they were knocked down by a car in a residential locality in south Chennai on Tuesday night.
The car, a red Santro driven by a bank manager, rammed into a group of people standing on the roadside, knocked down two people and kept going even as two more persons fell on its bonnet and were thrown away a few metres away.
The dead were identified as Piyari Lal, 63, and Abdul Rahim, 44, both residents of the housing complex where the incident happened.
The incident was captured on the CCTV installed in the locality and helped in identification of the driver who was apprehended and handed over to the police.
The driver has been remanded to judicial custody.
Police said that the driver wasn’t drunk but suspect that he was speeding and failed to brake in time when he came upon a group of people standing by the roadside.
Another police officer said that the driver apparently panicked, became nervous and pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes.
