On second thoughts
It was that time of the year. But did you notice it was a wee bit later than before?
At the stroke of the midnight hour, you were undoubtedly warbling Auld Lang Syne and exchanging air kisses with those around you. Ah, but let’s tell you that your timing was off, not way off, but not quite right either.
An extra second was added on to 2008 so the new year actually began at one second past 12. This will no doubt upset you no end. Think of all the things you could have done in that split second before beginning on a clean slate in 2009. Now for those of us, who had filled the cup of kindness several times over last night, the concept of an extra second would have no meaning unless it was that you could have downed an extra tequila. But the matter of time is taken very seriously by many. Elizabeth I once said, “All my possessions for a moment of time.” In today’s recessionary world, it is quite possible that all your possessions could well vanish in a moment of time. The addition of a second will be welcomed by those who feel that 24 hours in a day are not nearly enough. Now there are some of us who go along with that adage of unknown provenance, “Life is a waste of time and time is a waste of life, so waste your time and have the time of your life.” Well, at least that one second more is enough for you to have second thoughts about many things like rethinking all those well-meaning resolutions you had drawn up.
But be assured that the best things in life are worth waiting for, even if for one second more. And we’ll second that thought.
