india Updated: Jun 12, 2008 12:27 IST

A college student was killed and several others injured in a clash between supporters of CPI-M and Trinamool Congress at Nakkatigachh in Cooch Behar district, police said on Thursday.

The two sides clashed last night in which the student identified as Debabrata Pramanik (22) was killed. CPI-M leaders claimed Pramanik, a student of Tufanganj College, was their supporter.

Two Trinamool Congress supporters, Pran Kumar Barman and Brojendra Barman, were admitted to a local hospital with bullet wounds.

Both parties have called 24-hour bandh in Tufanganj-I block today to protest against the incident.

District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar Sinha said prohibitory orders have been imposed in the area to maintain order and the police are patrolling the troubled area.

Intermittent clashes have been continuing in the area since Trinamool Congress defeated CPI-M in panchayat elections.
