ONE PERSON was killed and 14 injured when a bus under contract with the MP State Road Transport Corporation (MPSRTC) overturned near the Akashwani Tower near Rau on Wednesday morning. The bus (MP-09-S-9937) was going from Indore to Khetia when in a bid to save a stray dog the driver suddenly made a sharp turn and the bus overturned.

The person who died has been identified as Shailesh (19), son of Harikishan resident of Qila Gate, Sendhwa. He was thrown out of the bus and died. The other passengers were trapped inside the bus since many of them were dozing when the accident occurred.

Passers-by and locals helped extricate them from the bus and police were called. The injured were taken to MY Hospital where all were released after treatment.

Among those injured were five labourers from West Bengal. They were working on a road project near Sendhwa and were going there when they met with an accident.

Several passengers alleged that the bus driver Kamlesh, who fled after the accident, was driving rashly and was also drunk. Conductor Suresh Chandra Sharma, resident of Gawli Palasia, also agreed that the driver was drunk at the time of the accident.

Interestingly, the contract of the bus with MPSRTC had expired on October 31, 2006, going by the label pasted on the bus. When the injured were brought to MY Hospital, there was acute shortage of staff and as so many injured came together there was chaos for some time. However, things smoothened out after some time.
