A CPI(M) activist was shot dead and four others were injured when a party procession was attacked by gunmen in Paschim Midnapore district where panchayat election are to be held on Sunday, police said.
The attackers fired on the procession at Sukhara village, killing Manmatha Mondal (30) on the spot.
The four injured were admitted at Jhargram sub-divisional hospital, the sources said.
Local CPI(M) leader Dahareswar Sen alleged that Maoist ultras and Jharkhand Party activists were behind the attack.
During a search operation, police found a motorbike from nearby Kushbani forest.
Meanwhile, an attempt to snatch the rifle of a bodyguard of a CPI(M) leader was foiled at Chandrapura village under Lalgarh police station last night.
While the rifle was initially snatched, bodyguard of another leader started firing from his firearms. Following a brief shootout, five persons were arrested, the sources said.
