A suspected Pakistani was killed while trying to cross the border in Jammu and Kashmir while his compatriots probably slunk back into Pakistan after 20 minutes of intense firing from Indian security forces, officials in Jammu said on Friday.
Describing the incident late on Thursday as a major infiltration bid being foiled in the state's Kanachak sector, officials said border guards had recovered the body.
According to KS Chauhan, additional deputy inspector general of the Border Security Force (BSF), a patrolling party had sighted movement at the border opposite its Gharud post, about 30 kms northwest of Jammu late on Thursday.
They opened fire at the suspected intruders, killing one man, suspected to be a Pakistani national.
"The group of infiltrators also fired at our men," Chahuhan told reporters in Jammu. "The firing lasted for more than 20 minutes."
He said he suspected that other men in the group might have escaped back to the Pakistani side under cover of darkness.
