The rescue on Tuesday of the starving and depressed Bahal sisters in Noida came too late. The elder, Anuradha, 43, who was in coma when she was rushed to a Noida hospital, died of multi-organ failure on Wednesday morning.
And the condition of the younger, Sonali, 41, who had locked herself up at home with her partner in sorrow for the past seven months, worsened a day after the police broke open the door to their house in Sector 29 and rushed the women to a hospital. Sonali had to be shifted to the intensive care unit of Kailash Hospital.
The sisters seem to have sunk into depression after their parents died in the mid-nineties. They probably sunk deeper when their brother moved out of the house after getting married in 2007 and the final blow came when their pet dog died seven months ago.
Their brother, Vipin Bahal, broke down when approached by mediapersons at the hospital. “I don’t know what happened. They were alright when I last met them in August 2010,” he said.
“I knew they were short-tempered but I thought that with our father’s property, which I transferred to them, and a bank balance, they would manage by themselves. I had no idea they were chronically depressed and could ever resort to self-deprivation in such a manner,” said Vipin, who works with a Gurgaon company and lives with his wife in Noida’s Sector 50.
Daughters of a retired colonel, Anuradha had been a self-employed chartered accountant for some time while Sonali worked with a company in Noida till 2008. Both had not married.
