'Only 12% women in J&K administrative service'

J&K, where sex ratio is below the national average, the percentage of female in state administrative service is just 12. There strength is just 4 % in police service.

This information was given by the government in reply to a question by MLC Dr Shehnaz Ganai.

She, along with Rani Billoria, are only two female members in the upper House while the strength of female in lower House is four.

The strength of female in senior scale of the Kashmir Administrative Service is 12.03% and in junior scale it's 11.87%.

In J&K Police, the total strength of females is 4.16% in all its 19 departments. There is no female in Special Security Guard (SSG) who are deployed for VIP security.

The situation is relatively better in accounts department where they constitute 19% of the total strength.
The sex ratio - no of females to 1000 male- is 883.

To another question by MLC about providing reservation for women in government jobs, since they constitute 50% of total population, the government said as of now it hadn't contemplated providing reservation to women in government jobs, though there were posts in some departments where only females were eligible to apply for recruitment.

The reply said, however, under J&K Reservation Act, 2004, 50% of seats in each category-including open category - are reserved for females to admission in MBBS and BDS.

Sensing gravity of the situation, the chairman legislative Council allowed 30-minute discussion on this subject, scheduled to take place latter.
